Veliko Tarnovo
Only a short drive of
less than 20 minutes from Sunflower Guest House lies the cultural and beautiful
town of Veliko Tarnovo. Its historical and architectural heritage allows you to
feel the romance of this old town and with its unique atmosphere it is an all
year round scene of arts, superb restaurants and a excellent destination for
cultural tourism in Bulgaria.
One of the
oldest in the country its history dates back to more than five thousand years
as proven by archaeological excavations.
After its
selection to be a capital in 1185, the town developed fast, as within the
period 12th – 14th century it was the most unconquerable Bulgarian fortress, as
well as a cultural and intellectual centre of Bulgaria.
Visit the
fortresses of Tsarevets and Trapezitsa, where the mediaeval kings reigned, and
the unique churches below the fortresses – pillows of the Bulgarians spirit
throughout the centuries. Enjoy the “Tsarevgrad Tarnov”, a light and sound show
held periodically over the fortresses after dark. (Check with the Tourism Board
for the dates of these shows) and why not visit the Multimedia Visitor Centre,
the only one of its kind on the Balkan peninsula, which depicts the glorious
past of this old capital.
